Fierce clashes between Syrian rebels and Russian forces on the M5 Highway to Aleppo

There are reported fierce clashes between Syrian rebels and Russian forces in Syria for the M5 Highway which was captured by Syrian rebels, yesterday. Both sides are claiming control of the strategic highway which connects Aleppo to Damascus.

Earlier this week, Syrian rebels in the northwest of Syria started a counteroffensive called “Deterrence of Aggression”, rapidly capturing several towns and villages and advancing closer to the city of Aleppo.

The Syrian rebellion is being lead by a variety of groups including pro-Turkish groups, Islamist groups and the Free Syrian Army. The Kurds in the northeast, backed by the US forces, have so far stayed away from the fighting.
