Syrian rebels launch a major offensive and capture up to 20 villages west of Aleppo

Taking advantage of the recent withdrawal of Hezbollah forces from north-Western Syria, yesterday, Syrian rebels mounted a major offensive against the Syrian Army and its Russian and Iranian allies. The Syrian rebels managed to capture up to 20 villages and came 6km close to Aleppo. Up to 40 Syrian Army soldiers were killed and others captured. At least one Russian military officer was also captured alive while others were killed in action.

The offensive by the Syrian rebels has been called operation “Deterrence of Aggression” and is being made in response to the daily shelling and bombing of towns and villages by the Syrian army, Russia and the Iranian proxies.ย  The rebel offensive is being conducted by various groups including the Free Syrian Army and Syrian Islamic groups. Unconfirmed reports state that the rebels have been aided by the Ukrainian intelligence services.

North-Western Syria is controlled by a range of different rebel groups that are fighting a war against the dictator, President Bashar Al-Assad, who held to power by waging a war against peaceful demonstrators during the Arab Spring.
