Syria appoints “Salvation Government” as a transitional government until March 2025

A transitional government has been appointed in Syria which will oversee the establishment of a functional administration and the restoration of security until March 2025. Syrian rebel commander Abu Mohammad al-Jolani has previously pledged free elections. Previous Tahrir al-Sham and Idlib government official Mohammed al-Bashir has been named Prime Minister. The new cabinet will work with the previous Assad cabinet on the transfer of power and restoration of institutions.

Basically, the previous Idlib government has taken over the government of Syria and no changes to the cabinet were made.

Syrians have protested that the announcement of the new government has been made with a white Islamic flag next to the green Syrian flag. The white Islamic flag with black writing reads “There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” and it is a popular flag and slogan used by many Islamic groups including the Taliban and ISIS.

Syrian rebel commander Mohammad al-Jolani has pledged that Syria will have a tolerant government and has also said that women will not be obliged to wear the hijab. Concerns remain by many Syrians over the Islamic composition of the new government.

The Salvation Government is composed of thus:

Mohammed al-Bashir: Prime Minister

Fadi al-Qassem: Minister of Development

Mohammad Abdul Rahman: Minister of Interior

Shadi al-Waisi: Minister of Justice

Hussam Haj Hussein: Minister of Awqaf

Abdel Moneim Abdel Hafez: Minister of Higher Education

Mazen Dukhan: Minister of Health

Basil Abdul Aziz: Minister of Economy

Mohammad Al-Omar: Minister of Information

Mohammad al-Ahmad: Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation
