The Kurdish armed forces of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have withdrawn from Deir Ezzor following mass protests and clashes. Kurdish SDF forces are now also facing riots and clashes in Raqqa, a city which they liberated from ISIS. Raqqa is an Arab-majority city. Previously, SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi called for a Syria that guarantees the rights of all Syrians, implying that the Kurds won’t be demanding a state of their own.
Kurdish forces control the north-eastern part of Syria including some cities with an Arab-majority population that are currently being contested by Turkish-backed Syrian rebel groups. In negotiations with Syrian rebel commander Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, the Kurds are demanding to retain their autonomy and their armed forces. Jolani is demanding for an integration of the Kurdish SDF with the regular Syrian army. Talks are ongoing.
Kurdish SDF leader Mazloum Abdi called for national dialogue saying: “We believe that Syria deserves to build its future together, away from hatred and divisions, and that comprehensive national dialogue is the only way to achieve the aspirations of Syrians for justice, dignity and peace.”
Yesterday, the Syrian rebel commander was also filmed driving the Turkish chief of national intelligence General Ibrahim Kalin around Damascus.
