The newly appointed President of Georgia Mikhail Kavelashvili has accused his official predecessor President Salome Zourabichvili of causing a constitutional crisis as she refuses to step down. The political opposition and President Salome Zourabichvili are contesting the legitimacy of the incumbent government that is lead by the Georgian Dream which lost the last elections.
Protests are being held every weekend in front of Georgia’s Parliament. The President attended the protests during the weekend and gave a speech to the demonstrators where she condemned police violence, vowed not to abandon the demonstrators and the described the appointment of the new President as “a mockery of democracy”. President Zourabichvili was recently in Paris for the opening ceremony of the Notre Dame Cathedral where she met with world leaders including President Donald Trump.
Protests last weekend were met with heavy police presence with footage of masked police below.
The newly appointed President is a popular footballer in Georgia and lacks a higher education. He is pro-Russia and enjoys close relations with the Georgian Dream oligarch, Bidzina Ivanishvili.
