Labour insiders unsure about the Prime Minister’s reform on Magisterial Inquiries

Having contacted at least three Labour Party insiders, The Maltese Herald was told they are unsure on what Prime Minister Robert Abela has in his mind about his proposed reform over Magisterial Inquiries.

A government MP has told The Maltese Herald that the issue has not yet been discussed and that the Parliamentary Group is awaiting the proposals that the Prime Minister wants to propose. Another MP has told us that he is totally unaware of this reform, but this may also be because some MPs don’t want 5to be associated with these proposed reforms.

Prime Minister Robert Abela wants to stop Jason Azzopardi from filing more requests for Magisterial Inquiries which he condemned as being vexatious. In reality, the only arraignments being made in Court today over corruption during Joseph Muscat’s premiership are only thanks to Magisterial Inquiries that have been requested by Opposition figures like Jason Azzopardi.

A Labour government technocrat told The Maltese Herald that the government will not be removing the right to request a Magisterial Inquiry but said that such requests can not be made on the back of press reports.

The Maltese Herald stands behind the investigative work of The Shift News and considers them as a positive contributor to the press landscape. The press has been a crucial and essential tool in our democracy to bring corrupt politicians to justice, especially in the absence of a Police force that actively investigates corruption in politics.
