When the Nationalist Opposition in 2017 submitted requests for Magisterial Inquiries over the Panama Papers, they did so on the back of reports and investigations by Daphne Caruana Galizia. Today, the Labour government is making the same accusations against The Shift News after having conducted multiple investigative reports on corruption by the Labour government. The Shift News is suing Prime Minister Robela Abela to challenge his claims that they are liars and a fake news outlet. Today, Jason Azzopardi is submitting requests for Magisterial Inquiries on the back of reports by The Shift News.
In many ways the situation with regard to rule-of-law is similar to what it was under Joseph Muscat’s administration. With a Police Force and an Attorney-General that consistently refuse to actively investigate political corruption, political corruption is only being revealed by the press and not the authorities who are supposed to uncover it. With the authorities failing to react to press revelations, civil society is now taking on the initiative to ensure that justice is done.
There even was a time when Labour used to say “let the institutions work”. Now, the narrative has changed because the press and civil society are compelling the institutions to actually do some work through Magisterial Inquiries. This is the behaviour of a criminal organisation and not of a conventional political party, and it is blatant and obvious. It destroys any pretenses that the government has any good will in curbing abuse of power not to mention its own cover ups of Labour’s political criminals and their rehabilitation such as Rosianne Cutajar and Justyne Caruana to name the few.
Why all this sudden fear from Magisterial Inquiries if the subjects supposedly have nothing to hide and The Shift News is just a fake news outlet? The priority is so high that the Prime Minister wants an immediate and urgent reform as if the criminal organisation is so weak it can be easily challenged by press reports.
