Update on the story about the declaration of assets by government MPs

Following the story we published yesterday about the Labour government’s refusal to publish the declaration of assets of its MPs we’ve received updates about our story from government sources.

At least two government MPs are currently being investigated over their declaration of assets on suspicions of fraudulently failing to list several of their assets. The Maltese Herald has so far not been provided with the names of the two MPs. There are also multiple investigations on these cases both by the Standards Commissioner and the Police.

Government sources have told The Maltese Herald that this recently-emerged scrutiny over the declaration of assets by the authorities may set some new precedents over how MPs list their assets. We were also told that the Office of the Prime Minister is in a current dispute with Standards Commissioner over the legal standards about the listing of assets.

The government is now claiming that the declaration of assets have been published but they have not yet been made available to journalists.

This is a developing story.
