Multiple scandals behind the declaration of assets: at least two Labour MPs are being investigated

This is the first time this year in many years that the government is late in presenting the declaration of assets of its MPs to Parliament. Multiple sources have confirmed with The Maltese Herald that the declaration of assets of at least two different Labour MPs are currently being investigated by the authorities. The investigations are related to fraudulent declarations.

The Maltese Herald has been informed that the Police have faced difficulties receiving information from Parliament in relation to the declaration of assets while the Commissioner for Standards is also refusing to initiate investigations on a matter related to these investigations. There is also pressure by the Prime Minister on the Speaker of Parliament and the Standards Commissioner to agree on the withholding of information and documents.

The Maltese Herald was not told who the MPs being investigated are with sources citing ongoing investigations.

The Nationalist Party has released a statement demanding the government to publish the declaration of assets but is unaware that the withholding of the publication is related to ongoing investigations. The Labour government is trying to avoid another scandal from coming to light by withholding the publication of these declarations.
