Italy arrests and deports criminal sought by the ICC: Osama Al-Masri greeted with cheers in Tripoli

Previous Libyan prison manager Osama Al-Masri (Osama Elmasry Njeem) was arrested in Turin, Italy last Sunday. The previous officer, who ran the infamous Mitiga Prison, is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity. He is being accused of committing and facilitating widespread murder, rape and torture of prisoners in Libya of different races and religions. He is also suspected of being involved in widespread kidnapping and human-slavery industry in the south-east of Libya.

Despite being arrested, Al-Masri was released from custody two days later and was sent back to Libya.

The International Criminal Court is seeking answers from Italy as to why he was allowed to be released from custody. The Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, said that Italy expelled him because he is “socially dangerous” but didn’t explain why it failed to cooperate with the ICC and comply with the Rome Statute.

Al-Masri was greeted with cheers by crowds in Tripoli and there is no sign that he was detained or will face justice in Libya.
