Italy’s Premier Giorgia Meloni is upping her attacks against Italy’s judiciary as she accuses them of interfering in government affairs. Her increasing attacks against the judiciary come as the International Criminal Court requested answers from the Italian government about Osama al-Masri’s release from custody and his deportation to Libya. The Italian governemnt has up to one month to submit its replies to the ICC.
Osama al-Masri is wanted by the ICC for crimes against humanity, and an Italian Magistrate opened an investigation on the Italian government over his release. Premier Meloni claims that al-Masri travelled to three other EU countries before stepping to Italy with some Italian government sources saying that al-Masri also visited Malta, but the Maltese Police have denied that al-Masri entered the Maltese border.
The Italian Premier is currently pushing for a reform in Italy that will remove the prosecutorial role of the judiciary. In Italy, Magistrates can be promoted to Prosecutors: a reform that was introduced in Italy in the 1980s to strengthen independent investigations, namely against the Mafia and organsied crime. The addition of Magistrates to the prosecutorial office led to the successful prosecution of hundreds of members of the Mafia, including the successful Maxiprocesso, which at the time dealt the biggest blow to organised crime in Italy.
