Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni under investigation for releasing Libyan criminal wanted by the ICC

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced yesterday that she is under investigation by the Italian Prosecutor for freeing Libyan prison official Osama al-Masri, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity. These charges include the systematic abetting of murder, torture and rape in Libya’s prisons. He is also accused of being deeply involved in the Libya’s slave-trade.

Also under investigation are the Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, and the cabinet undersecretary for intelligence matters Alfredo Mantovano.

Prime Minister Meloni stated that she “won’t be intimidated” by the investigation and will not be resigning. The Italian government is being condemned by NGOs for freeing a known criminal and is effectively allowing impunity for human trafficking and crimes against humanity in Libya that also effect Italy’s security and standing in the region.
