More on the dysfunction with ongoing Court cases and Police investigations

There is an ever growing trend of Police officers leaving the Police to work for criminal lawyers, some even of those they investigated and this is compounding the dysfunction in the justice system. As of recently, this dysfunction was highlighted with the fact that suspected murderers are being freed on bail with their court cases taking very long to conclude.

One case involving a Police turncoat was the Police officer Frank Tabone who previously investigated Arthur Azzopardi and is now working for him. In an incredible turn of events, Frank Tabone is now also contesting the general election with the Nationalist Party.

Another Police officer who left the Corps to work for a criminal defence lawyer is James Grech. James Grech was previously assigned to the murder case  of Christian Pandolfino and Ivor Maciejowski: the couple were murdered in their home in Sliema in 2020. Daniel Muka, one of the suspected murderers is still awaiting trial and he may very well be out on bail soon.

James Grech works for Joe Giglio who is the lawyer of the family (parte civile) in the case. In this particular case, James Grech cannot be considered a turncoat since he is still working for the victims. However, his absence from the police force has set back the police’s work on the case.

We don’t know how exactly ex-Police officer James Grech is helping Joe Giglio, but we do know that James Grech had requested Magistrate Gabriella Vella to arrest ex-Premier Joseph Muscat during the Vitals investigations, a request which was accepted by the Magistrate only to be turned down by Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa.

The most infamous case of a turncoat in the justice system is that of Charles Mercieca, who was previously a prosecutor working on Yorgen Fenech’s case and eventually joined his defence team.
