Following our story about the Deputy-Prime Minister Ian Borg and his opposing position to the government’s reform on Magisterial Inquiries, some Labour MPs criticised Borg in their chat groups and one even told him to stop “satisfying the opposition” with his positions. Others were more supportive. The now Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister had made a surprise statement in support of the Judiciary’s independence at the last Party conference.
Some Labour MPs have stated internally that they disapprove of the reforms, which were hastily passed through Parliament, but feel they have been outplayed by the Prime Minister and the Labour Party’s propaganda machine as they condemn Jason Azzopardi as “an extremist”. Others say that the Labour Party’s narrative and propaganda has been hijacked by Joseph Muscat’s friends, effectively even forcing their own agenda on the Party.
Discussions on policies within the Labour Party are barely happening, as Prime Minister Robert Abela has pushed forward with his agenda to reform the law on MPs’ declarations of assets and Magisterial Inquiries with both reforms intended to protect the corruption and abuse of power among Labour politicians.
