Ukrainian Opposition Leader Yulia Tymoshenko, and one of the fiercest critics of President Zelensky in Parliament, ruled out elections before the war is over. She pushed back against US President Donald Trump’s demands that Ukraine should hold elections and said that this decision is only up to Ukrainians alone. Her full statement is published below.
Yulia Tymoshenko was the Prime Minister of Ukraine from 2007 to 2010 under the President of Viktor Yanukovych. Today, she is the leader of the All-Ukrainian Union or the Batkivshchyna Party, the second-largest opposition group in the Ukrainian parliament with 24 MPs.
On the other hand, Petro Poroshenko, who is the leader of Ukraine’s largest opposition party with 27 MPs in Parliament is increasingly calling for new elections after he was sanctioned by the President and his assets frozen to effectively ban him from withdrawing assets from the country. Petro Poroshenko, a chocolate and confectionary oligarch who is the leader of the European Solidarity Party, lost the elections to Volodymyr Zelensky in 2019 due to widespread corruption issues. According to the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, President Zelensky still enjoys up to 57% of the population’s support.
