Speaking to journalists earlier today, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he would eagerly trade his position as President for Ukraine’s NATO membership saying he is focusing on Ukraine’s security now and can’t be the President in ten years. He also said that Ukraine doesn’t owe debt to the United States for the military aid that was provided to it by the previous administration, and President Trump can’t demand backdated payments for previous aid. President Zelensky also reiterated his position that the United States can’t mediate with Russia on Ukraine’s behalf.
President Zelensky made these comments after President Trump tried to force President Zelensky to sign 50% of Ukraine’s mineral rights over to the United States. President Zelensky did not sign the deal. Meanwhile, the United States and Russia are engaged in bilateral talks and are discussing the possibility of lifting sanctions on Russia. President Trump is also proposing to Russia to withdraw US troops from Europe. On the other hand, European countries are coordinating renewed military aid packages to Ukraine and further sanctions against Russia to keep up their support for Ukraine.
President Zelensky’s trust ratings in Ukraine have been soaring recently since President Trump called him a “dictator”.
