At a conference advocating for rare disease patients, Michelle Muscat – wife of disgraced ex-Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, – wore a Coco Chanel brooch which, being vintage and therefore, rare, (the irony!), is thought to cost over €600. As chair of the National Alliance for Rare Diseases, Michelle spoke on the financial struggles of patients and carers, yet her designer accessory clashed with the event’s message.
Personal style is usually irrelevant, but to flaunt wealth at a setting where patients and families struggle to afford basic treatment, risks undermining the credibility of the cause. In advocacy, image matters—especially when those affected cannot even afford basic care.
This isn’t the first time Michelle’s fashion choices have raised eyebrows; while recently attending a ceremony called the EURORDIS Black Pearl Awards in Brussels, she was seen carrying an expensive Yves Saint Laurent bag.
