Israel threatens to invade Damascus as it escalates its actions against Syria

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened to invade Damascus and occupy its Jaramana neighbourhood: a suburb of the capital city known for its Druze and Assyrian population. According to Reuters, Premier Netanyahu’s comments were made following violent unrest in the suburb which left a security officer dead. Druze community leaders have condemned the incident and called for the perpetrators to be brought to the authorities.

Israel is using the Druze community in the south of Syria as a pretext for invading and annexing Syrian territory, however Syrian Druze leaders and communities have consistently shown that they want to remain under the Syrian state in a united Syria. Protests against Israeli occupation in Syria have been met with repression while Israel keeps striking military targets across the country.

The Druze’s Suweida Military Council, which has been announced recently, has kept growing with the addition of the “Habran Youth”. The Suweida Military Council is flying the Syrian national flag and is in favour of integration with the official Syrian Army.
