Israel is stoking tensions in the south of Syria where it has occupied Mount Hermon, and parts of Quneitra and Daraa following the fall of the Assad regime. Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu made statements recently saying that Israel will not allow any transgressions against the Druze minority in the South of Syria. His comments were made just as a group of Druze in the south of Syria led by Commander Tareq al-Shoufi formed an independent military group called the Suwayda Military Council. Syrians in the South organsied protests in response to Netenyahu’s statements and the ongoing Israeli occupation.
According to El Manshar, which has reported this event extensively, the newly formed Druze military group is demanding to be integrated with the Syrian army and was yesterday photographed brandishing Syrian flags. The Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa also met with Druze community leaders this week. On the other hand, Israel is trying to give the impression that the Druze community in the South of Syria, which make up to 730,00 people, wants to join Israel.
Yesterday in Ankara, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani said that he is in favour of allowing Turkey to set up military bases in the south of Syria to guarantee security against Israel’s occupation. He said that Syria does not have the security capability to defend its borders in the south and would welcome Turkish bases in the region.
