Syria has refused to join the Abraham Accords and recognise Israel in exchange for the lifting of US sanctions. President Ahmed al-Sharaa said that Syria cannot recognise Israel while it occupies Syrian territory and conducts strikes against it, but it can consider it if conditions changed. The proposal was first floated by Republican Congressman Cory Mills in a visit to Syria, but the request was also made officially by the White House. Meanwhile, the UK has lifted sanctions on Syria’s military and intelligence agencies.
Israel is currently stoking tensions among sectarian groups in Syria to facilitate and justify an illegal invasion in the south of Syria. Among the minority groups with which Israel has been fueling tensions is the Druze community in Syriaโs southern Daraa province. Various Druze community leaders vowed to remain part of Syria.
Earlier this week, five members of the Syrian Army were ambushed and killed by a Druze paramilitary group in Jaramana, predominantly a Christian and Druze city. Clashes ensued after the incident, and protests by both Muslims and members of the Druze community followed.
