Reports show that on March 6th, when pro-Assad rebels started a rebellion in Latakia, Assadist rebels also committed a massacre on the Latakia-Tartus M1 Highway. Rebels seized control of the highway and began firing at every vehicle, killing many civilians in an attempt to block the road and create chaos right before the city’s entrance. Pro-Assadist rebels were quickly repelled by the government forces after they took over Latakia in a surprise rebellion. The rebellion was backed by an online disinformation and propaganda campaign that accused the government of sectarian killings. The Syrian government admitted that sectarian violence and vendettas also took place, but also stated the extent of these actions were exaggerated by recycling old footage and photos dating from the period of the Assad regime. A Judicial Investigation has also been opened to discover the full extent of the violence. Some of the perpetrators have already been arrested.
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said that the Syrian government will not allow the country to be disunited and will address the threats to create instability, but also said that no one is above the law and sectarian violence will not be tolerated.
