Fighting continues in parts of Latakia in Syria, but a pro-Assad rebellion that had briefly seized control of the region has been largely subdued, with most of its ringleaders captured or killed.
Earlier this week, pro-Assad rebels seized control of the Latakia region by capturing its mountainous areas. However, upon hearing news of the uprising, hundreds of Toyota pickup trucks carrying Syrian army forces surged into Latakia to quell the rebellion. More than thirty troops of the Syrian army have been killed.
Following the Syrian revolution and the fall of the Assad regime,pPro-Assadist officials and previous Syrian Army soldiers were given an amnesty . This time round pro-Assadist rebels who took part in the rebellion were not spared and were summarily executed. Others have been detained.
Following the failed rebellion, President Ahmed al-Sharaa gave a speech to the Syrian people saying that some remnants of the previous regime attempted to challenge the new Syria, but reiterated his call for a united Syria saying that the entire nation will stand in solidarity to protect its honour and dignity. He also said that “I remind you that we fought you in the battle for liberation, even as you sought to kill us. Our goal is to rebuild the country you destroyed. We have no desire for your blood.”
Syria risks being divided by sectarian fighting which is being fueled by Israel in the south with the Druze community, and the Kurds in the north who refuse to lay their down their weapons. Latakia is known to be the region of the Alawite sect which the Assad family made part of. Alawites protested in front of the Russian Hmeimim airbase demanding “protection”.
