The Union of Professional Educators have decried the lack of progress in talks between the Malta Union of Teachers and the government over new financial conditions of the collective agreement. The MUT previously suspended industrial action to resume talks with the government over a new collective agreement, assuring MCAST lecturers that it would promptly announce the government’s newly proposed financial conditions. No new announcements have been made from MUT so far.
The UPE stated that prolonging a definite decision would further weaken the chance of lecturers obtaining better financial conditions and claimed that a possible resolution may not materialise until the next Summer leaving lecturers uncertain over their future conditions. The UPE had previously insisted that industrial action should only have been lifted with clear guarantees of improvements to financial conditions.
