MUT suspends industrial action but teachers still demand commitments for salary increases

Following the meeting by the Malta Union of Teachers with its delegates yesterday, the union has agreed to suspend industrial action at MCAST in order to proceed with discussions over salary increases. One of the conditions by the government to the union to discuss salary increases was the lifting of industrial action.

However, now that the industrial action has been lifted, MCAST lecturers are demanding the MUT to compel the government to provide clear commitments over salary increases. The MUT leadership is telling its members that it will be striving to deliver these commitments as soon as possible. Negotiations will be held between the MUT and the Ministry of Education, but ant salary increases will have to be approved by the Office of the Prime Minister.

The new MCAST collective agreement will allow technicians, in addition to lecturers, to be promoted to professors. This is absurd to say the least. Traditionally, professorial roles are associated with academic qualifications and teaching experience. Allowing technicians, who may not have the same academic background, to attain this title could potentially undermine the integrity of the professorial rank. While it’s important to recognize the value and expertise that technicians bring to their fields, the decision may spark debates about the clarity of professional distinctions and the standards for academic recognition.
