Government passes controversial Bill 125 as Opposition walks out, protesters vow to fight on

As protests outside Parliament took place, government MPs pushed through the controversial Bill 125 stripping citizens of their right to request independent investigations by the Judiciary: a move that threatens democracy and the rule of law according to the Opposition. The Opposition walked out of Parliament  when the government presented the motion of censure against Opposition MP Karol Aquilina.

Opposition Leader Bernard Grech led his party out of Parliament in protest calling the motion of censure a “democratic disgrace” and refused to participate in what he described as “a direct attack on citizens’ rights.” Meanwhile, outside Parliament, demonstrators denounced the law on Magisterial Inquiries, chanting “Mafia!”

Prime Minister Robert Abela defended the law, insisting it would “streamline legal processes” and “prevent abuse of investigative resources.” However, legal experts and civil society groups argue that the bill removes a vital check on government power, potentially shielding corruption and misconduct from scrutiny.

Protesters have vowed to escalate their opposition in the coming days.
