Turkish military convoys enter Syria: unconfirmed reports Turkey will install anti-air defence

Yesterday night, Turkish military convoys entered Syria through the north-west of the country and the Bab al-Salamah crossing. The military convoys where cheered by residents as they drove through Syrian towns.

Unconfirmed press reports state that Turkey will be installing the Turkish Hisar anti-air defence systems in several Syrian bases including the Tiyas Air Base in Palmyra. According to the press reports, anti-air defence systems will also be installed in other bases and cities.

Israel has been regularly bombing and shelling Syria while stoking sectarian divisions as it seeks to destabilise Syria and expand its illegal occupation in the south. Turkey has repeatedly said that Israel’s actions in Syria are illegal and that Israel should withdraw from Israel without delay.

There is an evident and growing clash between Turkey and Israel over the future of Syria with Turkey intending to support its ally, the Syrian government, against Israel’s illegal occupation of the south of Syria and Mount Hermon. Israel’s latest illegal occupation is additional to its previous and illegal occupation of the Golan Heights.

Turkey has made no official statement about these movements yet.

On Sunday, Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem. The Greek Prime Minister is the first European leader to meet with the Israeli Prime Minister after he was issued an arrest warrant for war crimes by the International Criminal Court. Both Israel and Greece are Turkey’s military rivals and Premier Netanyahu confirmed they discussed security cooperation.
