In strange moves by the Court, Melvin Theuma is being allowed to refuse to testify

Yesterday, NET News published a feature on the ongoing phantom job case of Melvin Theuma. The Court case continued earlier this week. Melvin Theuma was given a job a phantom job by the Labour government specifically by the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff, Keith Schembri in May 2017 for, “allegedly”, part payment for brokering the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia with Yorgen Fenech.

According to press reports, Magistrate Monica Vella is invoking human rights legislation to allow Melvin Theuma to refuse to testify on the phantom job case. Sandro Craus, a government official who worked at the Office of the Prime Minister, was delegated to assign a phantom job to Melvin Theuma and he is now being accused in Court over embezzlement and misappropriation of public funds. Today Sandro Craus is the mayor of Rabat.

Melvin Theuma was given a presidential pardon in exchange for his full testimony on the case on the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. The legal defence team of Melvin Theuma are arguing that this presidential does not extend to his other “alleged” crimes however the phantom job case is directly related to the case of the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

On a technical and legal basis, it is still not very clear why the Courts are giving in to all of the requests by the legal defence team of Melvin Theuma. Prosecutors seem to be fighting against these decisions in Court and the case will continue.

    There is a very simple explanation: they made a deal with Theuma not to involve Schembri or anyone else except for Fenech. They have him
    and amnesty but made a mistake by forgetting the phantom job. If Theuma fails to testify , Craus and the rest of the accused will walk free. Theuma was clear that he wants a full pardon for all of his crimes otherwise he will reveal all.
