In a press statement issued yesterday, the Nationalist Party said that the Opposition Leader Bernard Grech was to visit China and meet with high-level government officials including government Ministers. On social media the Opposition Leader said that he was to visit China on an invitation to meet with representatives of the Chinese government and the business community.
The Opposition Leader and the Nationalist Party also said that this visit is part of the ongoing PN’s effort to strengthen relationships between the two countries and seek further investments opportunities.
Malta exported up to €37 million worth of products to China in 2023, most of it being plastics, rubbers and electronic equipment according to the National Statistics Office. In turn, China exported to Malta in 2023 a total of €371 million mostly in electronic equipment, machinery, clothing and even oil.
It is unclear what is the Nationalist Party’s policy on China and PN never outlined it in detail.
The Labour government has very good relationships with the Chinese government and the Chinese are also involved in Malta with a significant shareholding in Enemalta and other projects. Shanghai Electric that owns a stake in Enemalta, which is technically bankrupt, has been making profits off Enemalta by selling Enemalta electricity through its oil-fired Delimara plant.
