The Ombudsman, ex-Judge Joseph Zammit McKeon, has released a historic decision on the eve of Labour Day condemning the directive by the Ministry of Education censoring educators from making any public comments on the education system. the Ombudsman said that educators do not lose their freedom of speech once they start working for the Department of Education.
The Ombudsman also condemned the contradiction of an education system that claims to promote critical thinking while simultaneously prohibiting teachers from expressing their views.
The Ombudsman’s report was made in response to a complaint filed by the Union of Professional Educators. Teachers and political leader Sandro Gauci demanded a stronger reaction by the Malta Union of Teachers.
