Education Minister Clifton Grima says it is correct to censor teachers

While being confronted by a teacher during Jon Mallia’s show “Il-Każin”, Education Minister Clifton Grima said that the government is just following normal procedure by censoring teachers and compelling them to ask for permission to speak to the media. He also said that it was the right thing to do because comments on the education system by teachers should remain “constructive”.

You can watch the clip below.

The Education Minister is lying and twisting facts about the media and press rules by the government because the directive issued by the Office of the Permanent Secretary applies to the civil service and was enforced on political appointees. This was a separate circular that was sent by the OPM and the OPS and it is separate to the circular issued by the Ministry of Education last October. According to this circular, permission for media appearances and comments should be sought by the Permanent Secretary. The Education Ministry’s circular adds another layer of censorship by introducing permissions by the Ministry of Education.

The Ombudsman condemned the circular upon a report filed by the Union of Professional Educators describing it as irregular and also contradicting to the spirit of education.
