Exclusive: details of MUT-MCAST Collective Agreement

Yesterday, the Malta Union of Teachers announced that up to 92.3% of its members voted in favour of the agreed MUT-MCAST Collective Agreement. The agreement came to a close after the MUT declared industrial action and the MCAST administration declared an industrial dispute last year.

The agreement is backdated from January 2022 since the last collective agreement expired in 2021. The agreement covers all educational staff in MCAST including LSEs, and also senior researchers and directors. The collective agreement introduces the titles of “Professor” and “Associate Professor” in the educational and lecturing hierarchy at MCAST.

Educators will be allocated 20% of their time to work from their home. Student contact hours have been decreased from 28 hours perย  24 hours and special leave increased from 37.5 hours to 40 hours. Backdated allowances for Professors and Associate Professors will be paid at up to โ‚ฌ9000 and โ‚ฌ4000 respectively. Other allowances have also been given.

The salaries of MCAST educators is calculated to increase by up to 18% from 2023 to 2027.

    Hi,
Most of the details you published are wrong…I am part of the agreement so I can tell you the facts. Not sure why you keep publishing non-factual things:

    1) Educators will be allocated 20% of their time to work from their home. – Not true at all. Please check the presentation. Educators at MCAST cannot work from home. How can we lecture from home. Thats only available at UoM. Not us. The other ranks, except directors, can work 20% from home. But those are not educators. Please fix.

    2) Student contact hours have been decreased from 28 hours per 24 hours – Where did you ever read this. Contact hours per week from students have not be decreased.

    3) and special leave increased from 37.5 hours to 40 hours. – This is the only true thing you said. Well done mate. 1 out of 4.

    4) Backdated allowances for Professors and Associate Professors will be paid at up to โ‚ฌ9000 and โ‚ฌ4000 respectively. – Not true. They cannot be backdated as who gave you the information has not told you that the scheme for professorship has been agreed last year. The terms to become prof/ass prof were agreed last year but the enumeration wasn’t. So nothing will be backdated as no one till now has been given the title.

If you want real data, ask the persons that work there. I would also like to see, if possible, what our colleagues at Junior College and UoM have as terms in their agreement since you like to publish agreements. People say that professors are paid around 90K, which is far less than MCAST, with same qualifications and responsibilities.
