No official statement by the Libyan government following clashes in Tripoli

There has been no official government announcement in Libya following overnight clashes in the city’s capital. Clashes began after the head of the Stability Support Apparatus, Abdel Ghani al-Kikli know as “Ghnewa,” was murdered during the night.

The Stability Support Apparatus, established in 2021, by the Tripoli government of Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, aimed at consolidating militia groups into one centrralised force. Ghnewa was a close ally of Prime Minister Dbeibeh.

No group has declared responsibility for his killing and the attack which happened in Ain Zara, in the southern part of Tripoli, but reports state that the militias that killed Ghnewa came from Misrata. Reinforcements to defend the capital city arrived from Zuwara.

The government advised citizens to stay indoors and closed the universities.
