US President Donald Trump gave a historic speech in Jeddah Saudi Arabia at the Saudi-US Forum, yesterday in which he praised the Arabs and announced the lifting of sanctions on Syria. President Trump said that Syrians should be given a chance for greatness. Syrians celebrated the decision with fireworks and celebrations in the streets.
The summit was opened with a speech by Saudi’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin-Salman who praised the US-Saudi relationship and their strengthening economic ties. The Crown Prince also delineated the success of his Kingdom 2030 Vision which is diversifying the Saudi economy, but also hailed rising oil exports.
On the occasion of the summit, The White House announced that Saudi Arabia will be investing up to $600 billion in the US in the coming years and the US companies will also be investing in Saudi Arabia. However, the figure cited also includes a $142 billion US weapons sales deal to Saudi Arabia. The New York Times also reported that the US will be exporting large quantities of AI-chips to Saudi Arabia following the removal AI-chip export bans that were introduced by President Joe Biden for national security reasons.
In his speech, President Trump praised the Arabs of the Gulf for creating rich and growing economies, and contrasted their success with Iraq, which he said was an example of the failure of Western interventionist policies. His speech contrasted with that given to the same summit in 2017 on which he focused on mostly the threat of Islamic terrorism.
On Gaza, President Trump said that the people of Gaza deserved a better life, blamed Hamas for the war and did not mention Israel. Unconfirmed press reports state that President Trump is willing to recognise a Palestinian state in what seems to be further moves that are diverging from the policies of Israel’s Premier Benjamin Netanyahu.
