Today, the Sudanese people are celebrating Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Muhammed Bin-Salman, after Saudi Arabia struck a weapons convoy of the United Arab Emirates at Yemen’s Mukalla port. Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince has been one of the very few countries, along with Turkey which has been advocating for Sudan.
Sudan is besieged by its neighbours in a war conducted by the Rapid Support Forces, but the RSF can only conduct their widescale war across Darfur in Sudan, only thanks to the financing and backing of the United Arab Emirates. The UAE is also lobbying its allies and partners to cover-up its war crimes in Sudan and justify its imperialist adventure in the embattled country.
President Donald Trump has taken the UAE’s side on the matter, but Secretary Marco Rubio has pressured the UAE to stop their weapons flow to the RSF. The RSF are getting away with a genocide an extensive ethnic cleansing campaign against non-Arab tribes in Sudan thanks to the UAE’s international reach and lobbying. The UAE is also running an online propaganda campaign to cover-up its crimes.
This year, the RSF committed ethnic cleansing in Al-Fashir and the UAE’s media outlets tried to cover it up. The RSF have also taken a Sudanese journalist prisoner.
The common adage justifying the UAE’s proxy war in Sudan is that the Sudanese Armed Forces are Islamists and terrorists. The Sudanese Armed Forces have also been responsible for civilian deaths during the ongoing war in Sudan, however the attack against the SAF by the UAE and the RSF is an attack against the Sudanese state itself. The crimes of the Sudanese army are being used to delegitimise the Sudanese state itself and undermine its sovereignty.
Clearly, this is not just a war between two generals fighting for control as the UAE promotes it: it is a proxy war against the Sudanese state and the non-Arab peoples with an ongoing genocide of historic proportions. No one denies that the Sudanese state is a military dictatorship, but in this war specifically, there is only one side that is committing a systematic genocide and this is the RSF.
Supporting the UAE’s proxy war in Sudan are its allies Khalifa Haftar and Mahamat Idriss Dรฉby Itno. South Sudan and Ethiopia are also contributing as part of the logistics routes of the RSF. Besieged from all sides the Sudanese government is isolated in stopping this onslaught. Instead of supporting the Sudanese state to defeat the RSF, Europe and the US are towing the UAE’s line.
Turkey and Saudi Arabia have been so far the biggest advocates of Sudan on the international stage but Sudan needs more help to quash one of the worst genocidal and terrorist organisations in Africa today.
