The Maltese Herald is officially launching a campaign to persuade European leaders and American diplomats to engage with the United Arab Emirates and demand the immediate release of Sudanese journalist Muammar Ibrahim and all other journalists from detention by the Rapid Support Forces.
Muammar Ibrahim was captured by the Rapid Support Forces around October 26th when the Rapid Support Forces stormed the city of Al-Fashir and committed ethnic cleansing. We are deeply concerned about his security and his health and we fear that the worst can happen to him. Muammar Ibrahim was one of the last journalists freely reporting about the siege of Al-Fashir before it was captured by the RSF.
The UAE, which finances and arms the RSF, have significant leverage and influence over the RSF. European leaders and American diplomats have the power to demand the UAE to immediately request the RSF for Muammar Ibrahim’s release. We are urging European leaders most notably the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Keir Starmer, President of France Emmanuel Macron, EU Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to urgently and without delay engage with their Emirati counterparts and raise the issue of Muammar Ibrahim and the other Sudanese journalists who have been abducted.
The calls and the pressure expended by Western allies on the UAE, which are supposedly considered as our partners, should be enough to compel the RSF to release the journalist with immediate effect.
We also insist with the relevant international institutions, namely the EU and the International Criminal Court, to hold accountable in Darfur, Sudan any military force that harms and threatens the security of journalists.
