Surreal scenes took places yesterday evening as Syria’s President Ahmed Al-Sharaa gave an interview to Fox News during his visit to the United States of America. President Sharaa travelled to the US for discussions with President Donald Trump as the US lifted sanctions on Syria. State Secretary Marco Rubio said that the lifting of sanctions is conditional on several measures and reforms that Syria needs to undertake but these conditions were not published.
President Trump told reporters that he had an agreement with President Sharaa and that he likes him: he described hi mas a “tough guy”. This was the first time a Syrian leader visited the White House since the 1940s and the first visit by a Syrian President. Fares Al-Khoury visited the White House in 1945 but was Prime Minister. This was the second official meeting with President Sharaa: the first meeting too place in Saudi Arabia.
Syria is under the grip of an Israeli invasion which is supporting a sectarian rebellion by armed Druze groups in the Suweida province. Israel has occupied the territories of the Daraa and the Quneitra provinces along the Golan Heights. The Us has served as a mediator between the two sides and to restrain Israel’s attacks. Israel said that it won’t be withdrawing from the territories it has occupied and the Syrian government is demanding Israel’s withdrawal. President Sharaa reiterated with Fox News that Syria will not sign the Abraham Accords as long as Israel occupies Syria.
President Sharaa also visited Moscow recently where he requested the extradition of Bashar al-Assad.
