The Labour Party Member of the European Parliament is under police investigation in Belgium after having watched a football match from a corporate box booked by Huawei. The Belgian Police have extensive evidence on their case and he is requesting the removal of his parliamentary immunity after he realised that the Belgian police were to inevitably make the same request. The Belgian authorities have been investigating the case for some time because they have extensive recordings of the case, so it’s not as if Daniel Attard requested voluntarily to remove his parliamentary immunity as soon as he learned he was being investigated.
It’s important to put into context the person who is Daniel Attard. Daniel Attard was a Labour Party underling who made political success following backing and endorsement by Joseph Muscat and his wife. He is still closely associated with Joseph Muscat and his family. In his political campaign for the European Parliament, Daniel Attard regularly attacked journalists, attacked the judiciary, and also attacked the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, by using Russian rhetoric and accusing her of being a warmonger.
Daniel Attard is not new to irregular activity and behaviour. He worked at Malta’s High Commission in London as a full-time employee while supposedly serving as the mayor of Mtarfa. He ran a political campaign exploiting the most visceral elements iof the Labour Party, got the backing of Malta’s most corrupt politician in history, and riled the mob against his opponents and journalists. He has constantly accused the Opposition and the Nationalist Party of putting Malta’s security at risk but violated Malta’s national security at the first instant he had the opportunity to do so.
In Malta, Daniel Attard is already recognised as one of the worst products of our political class. Brussels is only just beginning to make his acquaintance.
