Last week, the Attorney-General made a very surprising move by filing an appeal against Daniel Meli’s Court victory to avoid extradition to the United States and instead face justice in Malta. Daniel Meli is wanted by the US authorities for selling trojan software online, and the government even amended the extradition law to enable him to appeal his extradition following a public outcry to keep the young man in Malta.
You can read the bizarre appeal by the Attorney-General below. This is one of the very rare instances and cases in which the Attorney-General is making an unusual and massive effort to defeat their suspect. This is from the same Attorney-General who is actively obstructing justice against high-profile political individuals while holding regular discussions and communication with the Minister for Justice Jonathan Attard.
The appeal is incredibly bizarre and displays a blatant effort to defeat Daniel Meli with any argument imaginable. In her appeal, the Attorney-General invoked Court sentences from the 19th century, invoked US law and Malta’s extradition treaty with the United States and also said that the failure of his extradition would be negative for Maltese-US relations.
Extradition and international treaties are not the responsibility of the Attorney-General: they are the responsibility of the Minister of Interior. The Attorney General is exceeding her authority by making an unusual effort to defeat a criminal suspect; not because he poses a danger to society, but because he is vulnerable and different. In stark contrast, she offers protective treatment to Labour Party politicians under police investigation, ensuring they are not prosecuted under any circumstance.
This the typical behaviour of deeply corrupt law enforcers and prosecutors who allocate their energies to the wrong places as a form of deflection from the actual and important cases they need to work on.
