California Governor Gavin Newson has called on President Trump to withdraw the National Guard troops that were deployed in Los Angeles, California to restore order after protests and riots erupted in response to raids by the US Customs and Enforcement agency. ICE has inflamed tensions in the city with its heavy-handed tactics in arresting and deporting suspected illegal immigrants without due process.
Riots in Los Angeles started earlier this weekend as ICE begun their raids in the city, but most of the people in the streets are protesting peacefully. Rioters threw rocks at the police and ICE officers, and cars were torched but no police or ICE officer was seriously injured.
California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom, is accusing President Trump and his government officials of unnecessary raising tensions in California with the deployment of the National Guard. The Governor also said that the President’s order violates the State’s sovereignty and that the LAPD Police did a good job in guarding federal government sites including the Metropolitan Detention Centre.
The US Defense Secretary is threatening to deploy the US Marines in the streets of LA.
Although riots and violence are indeed taking place, the majority of people are protesting peacefully. The US President and his officials are exaggerating the extent of the violence and the riots probably to find an excuse to deploy US troops in the streets. President Trump described the LA riots as an “insurrection” which is actually defined in US law as an act that aims to depose the government, such as the 2021 January 6th insurrection at the US Capitol.
