Ivan J Bartolo, a businessman and PN MP, is considering a bid for the party’s leadership and has proposed a six-point plan for the PN. Internal party sources told The Maltese Herald that Bartolo is currently gauging the level of support he might receive if he enters the race.
So far, Ivan J Bartolo is the only PN MP considering a leadership bid that clearly sets him apart from the other populist figures vying for the position. He is seen as many as a moderate and reasonable voice and also a man of integrity.
He doesn’t appear to have any baggage and has a successful business career behind him, demonstrating his skills and experience, unlike others, such as Alex Borg, who have little to show for theirs.
On the other hand, Ivan J Bartolo may not actually be ideal to propose radical solutions for Malta’s bourgeoning housing crisis. Ivan Bartolo was the owner of the company, 6PM before he sold it, but he now seems to be involved in real-estate. Individuals of his generation, especially individuals like him who are making money from real-estate in Malta may not be very sympathetic with the plight of the younger generations who have been crushed by the property market.
A candidate who is planning to propose more schemes similar to the ones being proposed by the Labour Party, just like Bernard Grech has been doing, won’t cut it. Ivan J Bartolo needs to come up with disruptive and big solutions to actually capture the modernist spirit he seems to project such as increasing the housing supply, building a metro system, and modernising the civil-service. He can’t stop at half-measures, otherwise Labour will still come out on top with its social-democrat model that is successfully keeping the majority of the electorate content
Below his proposed six-point plan as taken from his Facebook post.
1. An internal reform. Let’s clean up house. Professionalise. Modernise. Rebuild a team and structure we can all be proud of
2. Strategic Communication, Internally, we must respect and activate our people. Externally, we must speak to all sectors of our society with clarity and relevance.
3. A Future Government Team. Our MPs are all capable. Let’s map our skills, form a true shadow cabinet and show Malta what leadership could look like.
4. Campaign Readiness. Whether the election is in a year or tomorrow, we must act now. Strategy. Execution. Local engagement. One movement.
5. Building Bridges. It is time to strengthen ties with all segments of society. Trust is not built overnight, but we must start today.
6 .A New Narrative. No more blame culture. No more entitlement. We will earn votes because we have the vision, the courage, and the solutions.
