No new leadership contenders so far as Ivan J Bartolo shows reluctance

There seems to be no new PN leadership contenders so far, as Ivan J Bartolo has shown great reluctance and will probably not submit a bid.

Only Alex Borg has so far officially submitted his leadership bid. Adrian Delia expressed his interest to contest but has not submitted an official bid yet. Canvassers from his camp are urging Alex Borg to withdraw his nomination.

Due to the lack of leadership contenders promoting centrist politics, the Nationalist Party’s discourse is now dominated by populists and the party risks evolving into a more far-right version of itself, increasingly resembling its far-right European counterparts.

While PN supporters are all disappointed with Metsola’s reluctance to take over the party reigns, those who throw their hat in ring should not be discouraged or branded like this or like that. Everyone has some good attributes and having the courage to enter the leadership race is one of them. The Nationalist Party is riddled with deep rooted problems and the new leader cannot solve these problems by themselves. They need to build a team around them with various expertise to first find solutions for their financial problems and then build on from there. A new leader can bring in new talent with new ideas and modern skills. The party needs to be refreshed. It is clear that what worked during Fenech Adami’s time, has not worked since the party was in opposition. Eventually, the Maltese people will want a change in government and the Nationalist Party has to be prepared to take over.
