Former Nationalist Party leader Adrian Delia has officially declared his intention to contest the PN leadership race, making him the first to do so following Bernard Grech’s resignation. His comeback bid marks a historic and controversial moment, as he becomes the first PN politician ever to seek a return to the helm after being previously removed.
“I will be officially putting my name forward to once again serve as leader of our glorious party,” Delia announced on social media earlier today, in a post that sparked immediate reaction both within the party and across the political spectrum.
Acknowledging that the decision was not taken lightly, Delia wrote that “this is not an easy or impulsive decision,” insisting that, once again, he is placing the interests of the party and the country before his own.
Delia previously served as PN leader from 2017 until his ousting in 2020 following internal revolt and dwindling trust from key party figures. His leadership had been marred by controversy, factionalism, and a series of political setbacks. Despite this, a loyal base within the party has continued to support him, and his early announcement is seen as a bold attempt to reclaim lost ground.
The PN’s official call for expressions of interest remains open until Sunday. After this phase, candidates will undergo a due diligence process before formally submitting their nominations.
While other potential contenders remain tight-lipped, Delia’s early entry signals that this leadership race could be as fiery and fractious as the party’s recent history. Whether his return will be a revival or a repeat of past chaos remains to be seen.
