The clown show will be renewed

Adrian Delia told us that he is a changed man after announcing his new leadership bid. His foremost ally, Alex Borg, will be very content if Adrian Delia wins the race as he will gain an even more prominent position in the Nationalist Party. Franco Debono also seems to be in line for a political comeback with Adrian Delia at the helm. A star-trio of morally bankrupt lawyers that is dead-set to renew in real life all of the Nationalist Party’s worst stereotypes and bad traits.

I honestly can’t understand what’s going on in their mind except for unbridled narcissism. These individuals are in no way competent or fit to lead the government and they probably know this but don’t care. They are mostly driven by self-interest, vanity and also money, especially Adrian Delia who launched his political career at the peak of his massive debts which others had to partly pay for him. He is now making a living in court, and one of the major cases he is working on involves a client who failed to win the Magħtab Incinerator tender due to submitting a higher bid. Adrian Delia is arguing on behalf of this contractor to be awarded the tender instead.

On the other hand, you have Alex Borg, the novice who only held one job in his life and made a name in politics for lying on behalf of major contractors being given public land-leases. Then, you have Franco Debono who is the lawyer to a Libyan warlord living in Malta who ran a drug operation here and is currently terrorising Maltese citizens in the street.

These three individuals all have one thing in common: they are not men of the State and none of them are driven by the public good or the strengthening of the Maltese State and its society. They are also all far-right populists: not because they hold coherent and consistent political values but because they are populists themselves and will do and say whatever seems to be popular or gratifying. It’s also why Alex Borg has no problem in associating himself with the Labour Party and Ricky Caruana. The Maltese version of the loony right.

If there was a sure bet in Maltese politics is that it’s all downhill for PN with a populist setup, especially with these three. Anyone who pays good attention to Maltese politics is very much aware that the populist elements in local politics are already dominated and managed by the Labour Party, and competing against Labour with populist will only turn you into a smaller and pathetic version of Labour. The only populist alternative that could feasibly challenge Labour is a dressed-up and well-spoken version of Norman Lowell, which in that case, would also be doomed to fail, as it would prompt yet again a large number of floaters to vote Labour simply to keep PN out of office.

There are really no hard analyses to be made here. It’s so obvious to everyone how this will end that it’s even becoming boring as a talking point. It’s highly likely that an Adrian Delia leadership of the Nationalist Party will propel multiple new political parties into Parliament and strengthen Labour even more.
