The recently appointed head of the Police’s Financial Crimes Investigations Department, Fabian Fleri, isn’t off to a good start. The Maksar brothers, currently serving life sentences in jail, have a multi-million Euro worth of portfolio of assets they can make use of. The authorities even have a ledger listing the assets of the Maksar brothers.
The Maksar brothers are not alone in being unencumbered by the FCID. A long host of criminal suspects like Joseph Muscat still have their assets at their disposal despite pending freezing orders on them and it shows in the way they live their life and their constant air travel.
There doesn’t even seem to be the will to clamp down on the financial assets of serious and dangerous criminals. The Police are actually following a not so subtle government-policy of tolerating extensive financial crimes of dangerous and political criminals, especially after a series of laws that Labour has implemented which even relaxed the requirements for freezing orders.
