Malta’s Minister for Home Affairs Byron Camilleri and Maltese government officials are expected to be part of a European Union delegation traveling to Libya next week with EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brummer, and their Italian and Greek counterparts. They are set to meet with officials from both Libyan governments in Tripoli and Benghazi.
According to EuroNews, Commissioner Brunner said that the delegation had to be “tough and firm” over the rising number of migrant crossing from Libya to the Mediterranean Sea. According to Frontex reportsย the Central Mediterranean migration route is the only route that has not seen a decrease in activity this year. Immigration activity from Libya has increased in the past few weeks.
A refuge crisis was recently sparked in the Libyan border triangle after Khalifa Haftar invaded Sudan.
