China uses Malta’s visit to say it has “no conflict with the EU”

China has used the visit of Malta’s Foreign Affairs Minister to pretend it has excellent relations with the EU. In a statement issued by China’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, China stated that “There is no fundamental conflict of interest between China and the EU.”

China is currently in a dispute with the EU over its support to Russia’s war in Ukraine with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi also telling the EU High Representative Kaja Kallas that it is not in China’s interest for Russia to lose the war. The EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that China’s relationship with the EU should be calibrated according to China’s relationship with Russia, but Malta is not heeding any of these calls.

Malta has enjoyed strong relations with China, primarily due to the Labour Party, with ties dating back to 1971. China is using Malta to whitewash its current and ongoing disputes with the EU.

The statement by the Chinese Foreign Ministry also hailed its good relationships with Malta describing it as as “a small country with big diplomacy”.

China in turn uses its increased influence in Malta and its relationship with the Maltese government to strengthen its position in Europe. […]
