In accordance with the EU Bathing Water Directive, the Environmental Health Directorate within the Superintendence of Public Health has issued a precautionary warning advising the public against swimming in the area of Wilġa Street, St Julian’s.
This advisory follows reports of foul water seeping from beneath the rocks in the area. Authorities caution that this may impact the bathing water quality and pose a health risk to swimmers. Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) are currently investigating to determine the source of the suspected contamination.
At this stage, it is not yet possible to estimate how long the contamination will persist.
The affected location is identified as Site Code B05 – Wilġa, and warning signs have been installed on-site to inform beachgoers. Once the water quality is confirmed to be safe, the signage will be removed and a new press release will be issued to notify the public that bathing may safely resume.
For further information, the public is encouraged to contact the Environmental Health Directorate by calling 2133 7333 (available from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) or via email at wrau.ehd@gov.mt.
