President Trump to meet with Putin following meeting with Steve Witkoff

According to President Vladimir Putin’s aide, Yuri Ushakov, President Donald Trump and Putin have decided to meet to discuss the war in Ukraine. The announcement follows a meeting by Steve Witkoff with Putin at the Kremlin that took place yesterday.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has not yet confirmed whether he will attend the meeting, but earlier today he issued a statement saying that he had spoken with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and told him that Ukraine must be involved in any decision that concerns it.

Yesterday, President Trump said that President Zelensky may very well meet Putin soon, but no confirmation has been made about this prospect either by Russia or Ukraine.

There is now ambiguity on whether President Trump will go ahead and slap tariffs and sanctions on purchases of Russian oil following these announcements. Sanctions were supposed to be implemented on August 10th unless Russia stops its war in Ukraine.

President Trump has been pressuring Ukraine to capitulate to Russia by ceding the land it has lost to it and is also refusing to support Ukraine’s NATO membership=bid.
