Yesterday, during an official ceremony, Khalifa Haftar, the rump dictator of eastern Libya, has officially welcomed his sons into their new top-ranking military roles as he poured praise over them in a hall packed with military officers and tribal leaders. Khalifa Haftar has appointed two of his sons to the top army posts just right below his rank with Saddam Haftar being made Deputy-Commander and Khaled Haftar made Chief of Staff.
The appointments were made just as Libya is holding municipal elections as part of a United Nations sponsored plan to see Libya united into one functioning state. So far, elections have been held in several municipalities from November last year which mostly include municipalities in the west of Libya under the control of the Government of National Unity in Tripoli. The latest elections were held in the north-west of Libya in the municipalities of Zawiya.
Khalifa Haftar’s government has cancelled municipal elections in Benghazi, Tobruk, Sabha, and Sirte and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya is urging the Benghazi government to reconsider this decision.
