India’s Prime Minister Nerandra Modi is ignoring US president Donald Trump’s 50% tariffs on Indian products and instead of negotiating under pressure, is allegedly looking to strengthen trade ties with China and Russia.
Modi was in China earlier today meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping in Tianjin, China on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). Modi will also hold a meetign with Russia’s Vladimir Putin, who is also a the summit, tomorrow.
India’s Prime Minister is also allegedly frustrated with President Trump for falsely bragging that he ended the war between India and Pakistan this year.
The tariffs imposed on India are part of the tariffs that President Trump is imposing on countries as part of his trade policy, and they became effective on August 27th. In addition, India was threatened with further tariffs and sanctions by the President Trump for purchasing Russian oil but India has also refused to back down under this pressure and Premier Modi said that India will keep buying Russian oil.
In public, and after a one-hour meeting with Xi Jinping, Modi highlighted the positive progress in reducing tensions over China’s and India’s shared 3,800 KM border.
Up to 20 countries were present at the summit to discuss counter-terrorism, security, and trade. Among the leaders present included Turkey’s President Tayyup Erdogan, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, Pakistan’s Premier Shehbaz Sharif and Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. UN Secretary-General António Guterres was also present.
